Keshi pearls

The term ‘keshi’ can sometimes be used for any baroque pearl but in the strict sense of the word it is a pearl which forms spontaneously in the mollusk without any mantle tissue or bead. These pearls can be quite bizarre in shape which makes them very interesting to use in jewellery. Although pearls are delicate they have been used successfully in freshwater pearl jewellery for thousands of years. They are sensitive to heat, chemicals such as perfume and hairspray and abrasions and as such should be stored in a soft cloth bag and kept away from other jewellery or materials. They should be wiped gently with a damp cloth after wearing and cleaned occasionally in warm water with mild soap. Jewellery settings in rings and bracelets for example should be protective and if they are not then the piece should be considered for occasional rather than everyday use. Pearl jewellery should be the last thing you put on before you go out and the first thing you take off when returning home in the evening.
